A Small Project with a Big Impact

At Aspen Home Improvement, we’ve worked on plenty of beautiful mountain homes around Aspen. And while many have jaw-dropping views and cozy fireplaces, even the nicest properties sometimes need a little love behind closed doors—literally.

This recent custom closet renovation in Aspen, CO was a small project with a huge payoff. What started as a basic upgrade turned into a total transformation that made life easier for guests, improved the rental’s functionality, and even boosted the owner’s return on investment.

It’s proof that thoughtful storage design can completely change how a space feels—and performs.

The Property: Aspen Charm, With One Flaw

The property checked all the boxes: a two-bedroom, two-bath vacation rental less than a minute’s walk from world-class skiing and the Silver Queen Gondola, complete with a full kitchen, garage parking, and that signature Aspen charm.

But the storage situation? Not so charming.

When the owners called us, they had one clear goal—make the closet beautiful, functional, and easy for guests to use.The existing setup had three dated doors and minimal organization. It worked—but it didn’t fit the vibe of a high-end rental.

That’s where we came in. Our plan: transform a tired utility closet into a clean, modern, guest-friendly storage zone that actually belonged in the home.

The Plan: Mountain Style Meets Functionality

The space was roughly 7’ x 7’ x 16”—compact but full of potential. No plumbing or electrical work was needed, but the drywall behind the old cabinets required serious prep.

Layers of wallpaper had to be stripped, sealant paints applied, and 4–5 skim coats of drywall mud smoothed over to create a perfect surface.

We used cabinet-grade maple, custom-built to fit the space. The wood was finished with an aged barrel stain and multiple coats of durable, water-based polyurethane—carefully matched to the home’s existing trim and silver-cherry furniture.

The final touch? Brushed nickel hardware, tying the design back to the kitchen and bath finishes. The result: a natural, mountain-modern look that felt cohesive, timeless, and fresh.

Functional Design, Built for Guests

The new closet features custom cubbies, a floating bench, upper shelving, and a sturdy coat rack—everything a mountain guest could need.

Since guests store skis and snowboards outside, the cubbies were sized specifically for ski boots and everyday winter gear.

The bench wasn’t just designed to look sleek—it’s built to last. Reinforced with steel bracing and made from 1½-inch-thick double-layered wood, it’s sturdy enough for ski boots and wet gear. The finish is sealed to resist scuffs and water damage.

We also replaced the old carpet with grip-textured tile, ideal for wet shoes and snow gear. It’s durable, easy to clean, and elevates the overall look of the space.

Before and After: A Total Transformation

When everything came together, the difference was night and day.

Before: dark, cramped, and forgettable.
After: bright, organized, and inviting.

Guests immediately noticed how much easier it was to unpack and stay organized. Owners say it’s now one of the first things people compliment when they arrive.

That’s the kind of reaction we love—because in Aspen’s high-end vacation rental market, details like this matter.

A well-designed closet might not headline a review, but it’s one of the reasons guests leave five stars—and book again.

Why Custom Closets Are Worth It in Aspen

If you own a vacation rental in Aspen or Snowmass, a custom closet may not be your top priority—but it’s one of the smartest investments you can make.

A well-designed storage space:

  • Keeps guests organized and stress-free

  • Protects your home from clutter and wear

  • Adds a sense of luxury that photographs beautifully

  • Boosts long-term property value
